The Golden Retriever half in a Delhi summer

The summer clip
From about March, keep the coat short and even, roughly a finger's width long, so air reaches the skin. Never shave a Goldendoodle to the skin: the coat also shields it from the sun, and shaved doodles burn. Ask your groomer to thin any dense undercoat rather than just cutting the top.
The daily pattern
- Walks before about 6 am and after about 9 pm from April to June.
- No walking on sun-baked asphalt; if the back of your hand cannot rest on it for five seconds, it is too hot.
- A cool room for the middle of the day, with air conditioning or a fan and a tiled floor.
- Short play sessions indoors. A Goldendoodle will fetch until it overheats, so stop the game for it.

F1 or F1B for a Delhi home?
Delhi is dry for most of the year, and in dry heat a short clip matters more than the generation. The difference between an F1 and an F1B shows up in two places:
- The monsoon, July to September. A curlier F1B coat holds humid air and rainwater against the skin and mats quickly if it is left damp. A wavier F1 coat is more forgiving when brushing slips.
- Allergies at home. If someone reacts to dogs, an F1B usually drops less hair around the house, though no generation is hypoallergenic.

Winter coat care in Delhi
Delhi's winter is the easy season for a Goldendoodle's body and the hard one for its coat.
- Let the coat grow a little from about November, for warmth on cold, foggy mornings. A longer coat mats faster, so brush it through to the skin more often, not less.
- Dry fully after a bath. A thick coat left damp in a cold room stays wet for hours and mats against the skin. Use a dryer on a cool or warm setting, never hot, and finish with a metal comb.
- Bathe less, brush more. Winter dust and smog dull a light coat quickly, but frequent baths dry the skin. Brushing and wiping the legs and face after walks keeps most of it out.
Poor-air days with a dog that needs company
From around late October into January, Delhi often has weeks of very poor air. On those days, keep outdoor time to short toilet breaks and move the rest of the day's activity indoors. A Goldendoodle copes with a short walk far better than with boredom and being left alone, so plan the indoor day:
- Scatter part of a meal on a sniff mat or across a rug; sniffing tires a dog out quickly.
- Use food puzzles or a stuffed chew for quiet time.
- Do five-minute training sessions through the day: sit, stay, recall down a corridor.
- Play tug or hide-and-seek with a favourite toy.
- Wipe the face, paws and legs after going out, and watch for coughing or runny eyes.

Working days, families and flats
Long commutes
Goldendoodles are people-focused and prone to separation anxiety. With Delhi commutes, a working day can easily keep a home empty for ten hours or more. If that is your household, arrange a dog walker, daycare or family help before the puppy arrives, not after the chewed door.
Children and grandparents
A Goldendoodle is usually gentle and patient, which suits Delhi's many multi-generation households. A young one is also big and bouncy, and can knock over a small child or an elderly relative. Teach “four paws on the floor” from the first week.
Stairs and society rules
A grown Goldendoodle weighs 20 to 30 kg, so think about walk-up stairs in a builder floor before you commit. In a society, keep your dog leashed in common areas and clean up after it; most disputes start there.
Registering your Goldendoodle in Delhi
In areas run by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, pet dogs must be registered. According to the MCD pet dog registration portal:
- Apply online only, through the MCD portal, preferably with an Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
- You need an anti-rabies vaccination certificate. The registration is valid for up to one year and is tied to the vaccination date.
- Fees: ₹500 for a new registration and ₹500 to renew, with a late fee of ₹100 a month once the one-month grace period after the rabies certificate expires has passed.
Your puppy will usually be too young for its rabies vaccination when it arrives. Follow the booster schedule that comes with it, then register once your vet has given the rabies shot. If you live in an NDMC or Delhi Cantonment area, check the process with that body instead, and confirm current fees before you apply.

- A generation nobody can explain. Ask which generation the litter is and what both parents are. A breeder answers at once.
- “Mini” puppies with no parents to see. Adult size follows the parents; without seeing them, you are guessing.
- No live look at the mother. In person or on an unedited live video call, with the litter. A recorded clip is not the same thing.
