Which Goldendoodle coat copes with Mumbai?
Buyers in Mumbai often ask whether an F1 or an F1B will cope better with the humidity. The honest answer is that both need the same discipline, for different reasons:
- Curlier coats (usually F1B) hold moisture right at the roots and dry slowly. Left damp, they mat and trap heat against the skin. They drop the least hair, which matters if anyone at home has allergies.
- Wavier coats (usually F1) mat a little more slowly, which forgives the odd missed brushing, but they shed a little more, and loose hair clings to everything in humid air.

Spotting yeast and skin trouble early
Warm, damp skin under a thick coat is exactly what yeast and bacteria like. Most skin problems in humid cities start small and are easy to treat if you catch them early. Once a week, part the coat and look, and smell, for:
- A musty or sour smell from the skin, paws or ears
- Greasy, flaky or reddened skin, especially in the armpits, groin and under the collar
- Constant licking or chewing of the paws, or reddish-brown staining between the toes
- Dark, waxy or smelly discharge in the ears, or head-shaking
- A hot, wet, painful patch that appears suddenly: a hot spot
Any of these is a reason to see a vet, sooner rather than later. Do not try to treat skin or ear problems with home remedies; the wrong product can make them worse.
Keeping a home and a dog bed dry
From June to September, damp gets into everything in a Mumbai flat, including your dog's bed and towels. A dog lying on a damp bed undoes all the work of drying its coat.
- Keep two bed covers and several towels, so one set is always dry.
- Choose a raised bed or one with a washable, quick-drying cover.

- Go early, before the sand heats up.
- Do not let your dog drink seawater; carry fresh water.
- Rinse salt and sand out of the coat with fresh water, then dry it to the skin.
- Check between the toes for sand and small cuts.
