A big dog in a compact flat
It is the obvious first question for a Mumbai home, and the honest answer is that flat size matters less than routine. A Standard Poodle is an indoor, people-focused dog that settles calmly in a 1BHK or 2BHK. It will not settle in any flat if it only goes out for a quick toilet break.
- Two proper outings a day, including through the monsoon. Early morning is usually the best time in Mumbai, before the heat and the crowds.
- A plan for washout days. On days of very heavy rain, swap part of the walk for training, puzzle feeders and games indoors, and use a sheltered spot for toilet breaks if your building allows it.
- Somewhere to lie that is cool and dry. A raised bed away from damp walls, in a room with a fan or good air flow, helps the coat and skin as much as the dog's comfort.

Keeping a Poodle coat dry in Mumbai
Mumbai air carries moisture almost all year, and the monsoon from June to September brings very heavy rain. A dense curly coat holds that damp against the skin, and damp skin under a thick coat is where hot spots and fungal irritation start. Owners who dry properly have few problems. Owners who towel the surface and move on have them constantly.
The drying routine
- Keep towels and a dryer by the door so drying happens every time.
- Towel off, then blow-dry on a cool or low setting while brushing, until the coat is dry right down to the skin, not just on the surface.
- Dry the ears, the paws and between the toes last, every time.
- Wash or swap the dog's bedding often in the monsoon; damp bedding undoes good drying.
Weekly skin and ear check
Once a week, part the coat and look at the skin in the armpits, groin, behind the ears, along the belly and between the toes. Red, moist, smelly or flaking patches should go to the vet early, while they are easy to treat. Floppy ears and humid air are a common cause of ear infections, so check and clean the ears as your vet advises.
The right clip
Keep a short, even clip from June to September so the coat dries quickly, and let a good groomer guide you: many will suggest a shorter clip than you expect, and in Mumbai it is sensible advice. Budget around ₹1,500 to ₹3,500 a session every six to eight weeks.
Leptospirosis and standing water

The BMC licence and your society's pet policy
BMC dog licence
Under Sections 191A and 191B of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888, you need a licence to keep a dog in Mumbai. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) handles licences and renewals online through the MCGM portal, and asks for proof that the dog has been vaccinated against rabies and leptospirosis. The BMC has previously said it can seize unlicensed dogs. Fees have changed over the years, so check the current fee and process on the portal once your puppy has had its rabies vaccination.
Your housing society
Maharashtra's cooperatives department has directed housing societies to adopt formal pet policies in line with the Animal Welfare Board of India's guidelines. Under that guidance, a society:
- cannot impose a blanket ban on pet dogs, even with a majority vote
- cannot restrict particular breeds or sizes
- cannot bar pets from lifts or charge pet owners extra to use them
- can set walking hours for society parks, after consulting residents
Owners, in turn, must keep dogs leashed in shared spaces and clean up after them. Before you commit to a puppy, ask for your society's pet policy in writing. It is far easier to settle any questions before a 25 kg adult is living in the building.
