Pune's hills with a Goldendoodle
Pune's tekdis, the hills inside and around the city, and the Sahyadri foothills beyond it give dog owners something few Indian cities offer: real hill walks close to home. An adult Goldendoodle usually loves them. A puppy needs to wait.
Build up slowly
A Goldendoodle keeps growing until about 12 to 18 months. Until then, keep to short, gentle walks on the flat, and let it explore at its own pace. Steep climbs and long descents are the hardest exercise there is on young hips and elbows. After that, build distance gradually, as you would for yourself.
On the hill
- Go early. Rock and bare ground heat up quickly, even in the milder months.
- Carry water and a bowl; there is rarely any on the trail.
- Check paws for cuts and cracked pads, and the coat for burrs and seeds, afterwards.
- Keep your dog on a lead near cliffs, roads, livestock and other dogs.
- Check each place's current rules on dogs before you go.
Snakes, slopes and wet coats
The monsoon turns Pune's hills green, and it is also when snakes are most active around the city's edges, in scrub, long grass and rock piles. A curious Goldendoodle nosing into the undergrowth is at risk.
- Stay on clear paths and keep your dog on a lead.
- Walk in daylight and avoid long grass, rock piles and building rubble.
- If your dog yelps, then shows swelling, bleeding, drooling or weakness, keep it calm and still, and get to a vet immediately. Do not cut, suck or tie the wound.

Weekend getaways with a big dog
Many Pune families spend weekends out of the city, and a Goldendoodle is usually a keen traveller. A 20 to 30 kg dog in a car needs a little preparation.
- Start with short, happy drives while your puppy is young, ending somewhere fun.
- Secure your dog with a crash-tested harness or crate, never loose on a lap.
- Feed a light meal a few hours before the drive to reduce car sickness.
- Stop every couple of hours for water and a short walk, on a lead.
- Never leave your dog in a parked car. It heats up dangerously fast, even with a window open.

F1 or F1B for Pune?
Pune's drier air makes either generation practical. A wavier F1 coat, which can struggle in coastal humidity, is quite manageable here, and an F1B's curl dries faster than it would in Mumbai. Either way, April and May are the months to be strict: a short clip, walks before about 7 am and after sunset, and a cool room through the afternoon.
PMC and PCMC licences
Your dog will need a licence from Pune Municipal Corporation or Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, depending on where you live. Both ask for proof of rabies vaccination and renew each year, and your housing society's no-objection certificate may be among the documents asked for.
