The Royal Paws breeds and raises its Standard Poodles in Bathinda, Punjab, for families across India, Chennai included. Puppies are priced at ₹85,000 to ₹3,00,000 by lineage and KCI papers. In Chennai the breed does well for owners who plan around the heat: a short coat, dawn and evening walks, and a cool place to rest by day. Our Standard Poodle breed guide covers the breed itself; call 7791901085 to ask about the current litter.
A daily routine built around the heat
Chennai is warm to hot through most of the year, with coastal humidity on top, and the hottest weeks usually arrive around May and June. That makes heat management a year-round routine rather than a summer adjustment.
Walk times
In the hot months, walk before about 6:30 am and after about 7 pm, and keep the middle of the day for rest indoors. Even in the cooler months, avoid long, hard exercise in the afternoon sun.
Hot surfaces
Tar roads, paving and sand soak up the sun and stay hot well after sunset. Test the ground with the back of your hand for five seconds before walking, keep to shade and grass where you can, and remember that sand can burn paws even when the sea breeze feels pleasant.
A cool place to rest
A Standard Poodle needs a cool room during the hottest part of the day. That can be air conditioning, or a well-ventilated room with a fan, shade from direct sun and a tiled floor to lie on. A flat that is shut up and hot while everyone is at work is the one situation to solve before the puppy arrives.
Water and rest
Keep fresh water in more than one place, carry water on walks, and let your Poodle set the pace in warm weather. A young Standard will happily play past the point of overheating, so call the breaks for it.
Coat and skin care in a humid city
- Keep the clip short for most of the year, and at least from March to September. A short, even coat lets air reach the skin and dries quickly. Never shave to the skin; the coat also shields it from the sun.
- Groom a little more often. In Chennai, a professional groom about every six weeks, rather than every eight, keeps the coat short and the skin healthy. Budget around ₹1,500 to ₹3,500 a session.
- Watch the ears. Drop ears and humid air are a common cause of ear infections. Check them weekly for redness, smell or discharge, and keep them dry after baths.
- Dry after every bath or wet walk, right down to the skin. Our drying routine and weekly skin check for humid cities explains how.
The north-east monsoon and cyclone season
Unlike most of India, Chennai gets most of its rain from the north-east monsoon, roughly October to December, sometimes with cyclones, heavy downpours and flooded streets. A little preparation makes those weeks much easier with a dog.
- An indoor toilet option, such as a tray or pads on the balcony, for days when going out is not safe.
- A plan for power cuts. If fans and air conditioning go off in the humid heat after a storm, know where the coolest spot in your home is.
- Keep clear of floodwater. It can carry sewage, sharp debris and disease. Wipe paws and legs after any wet walk.
- Keep papers dry. Store the vaccination records and licence details in a waterproof pouch with your own documents.
- Indoor games such as puzzle feeders, short training sessions and hide-and-seek keep a clever dog settled during days indoors.
GCC licence and microchip
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) requires pet dogs to be licensed and has made microchipping mandatory. As reported:
- Licence, rabies vaccination and microchip are all required. The microchip links your dog to you and to its vaccination record.
- Deadline and fines: when the microchipping rule was announced in September 2025, GCC mentioned fines of up to ₹3,000. After the deadline, finally set for December 2025, non-compliant owners were reported to be fined ₹5,000 each.
- Where: GCC has offered free licensing and microchipping at designated centres in the city.
- In public: dogs must be leashed, and muzzled where required.
Your puppy is likely to be too young for its rabies vaccination when it arrives, so follow the booster schedule that comes with it, then license and microchip it with GCC once your vet has given the rabies shot. Check the current process and fees with the corporation at that point, as the rules have changed several times.
From Bathinda to Chennai
Chennai is more than 2,000 km from Bathinda by road, so this is a long-distance handover where timing matters as much as the route.
Delivery
When we deliver, your puppy travels by car with a responsible person and is handed to you in person. Puppies are never sent alone as cargo. We do not transport puppies in extreme heat; the journey waits for a safe day. Before delivery, we set up a live video call so you can see your puppy and its mother. Ask us about delivery timing and any cost for your city before you book.
Picking the season
Two periods are hard for this journey: the peak heat from about April to June, both along the route and in Chennai, and the heavy rain of the north-east monsoon from about October to December. The drier, milder weeks in between, around January and February, are usually the easiest. Tell us your preferred timing early so we can plan together.
Collection
You can collect your puppy from us in Bathinda, which is also the best chance to meet the parents and see where the litter was raised.
Before arrival
- Set up the cool room and a water station.
- Choose a Chennai vet, ideally one used to skin and ear problems in humid heat, and book the first check-up for the week the puppy arrives.
- Find a groomer who will keep a Poodle coat short and scissored, not shaved.
A good breeder should ask you about the heat
For a Chennai home, the conversation with any breeder should include the climate. If a seller never asks how you will keep a big, curly-coated dog cool, they have either not thought about it or are not planning to be around after the sale.
Expect questions like these, and have your answers ready:
- Where will the puppy rest during the hottest part of the day?
- When will you walk it in May and June?
- Who is at home during the day, and is there air conditioning or good ventilation?
- Have you found a groomer and a vet nearby?
In turn, ask to see the mother and the litter live on video, with the vaccination and vet records. We never ask for a deposit on the first call. The booking steps set out what happens next.

Standard Poodles in Chennai: Your Questions
Can a Standard Poodle live comfortably in Chennai's heat?
Yes, with a routine built around the heat rather than against it: walks at dawn and after dark in the hot months, a short clip, plenty of water, and a cool room during the day. What a Standard Poodle cannot do is a midday walk in May. If your home stays hot and closed all day, solve that before bringing a puppy home.
Does my Standard Poodle need a licence and microchip in Chennai?
Yes. The Greater Chennai Corporation requires pet dogs to be licensed, vaccinated against rabies and microchipped. Its microchipping deadline passed in December 2025, and non-compliant owners were reported to be fined ₹5,000. GCC has offered licensing and microchipping free at its designated centres; check the current process when your puppy comes home.
What clip should a Standard Poodle have in Chennai?
A short, even clip for most of the year, and at least from March to September. It lets air reach the skin and dries quickly after a bath or a wet walk. Never shave to the skin, which exposes it to sunburn, and plan on a groom about every six weeks rather than every eight.
How do I keep my dog safe during the north-east monsoon and cyclones?
Chennai's heaviest rain comes from October to December, sometimes with cyclones and flooding. Keep your dog out of floodwater, have an indoor toilet option ready, plan for power cuts that switch off fans and air conditioning, and keep vaccination and licence papers in a waterproof pouch.
What are the signs of heatstroke in a dog?
Heavy panting that does not settle, drooling, a bright red tongue or gums, weakness, stumbling or vomiting. Move the dog somewhere cool, wet it with cool (not iced) water, offer small sips, and get to a vet straight away. Heatstroke is an emergency.
Can you deliver a Standard Poodle puppy to Chennai?
